Charlie completes One MILLION Steps and raises £3,000!
- 15 October 2018
Charlie is a Harrow resident living with diabetes and earlier this year, the Diabetes UK One Million Step Challenge followed by their annual 12 Bridges Challenge caught his imagination as a fun summer activity – then the heatwave arrived...
He was persuaded to set up a fundraising page and promote it amongst friends using the hashtag #CharliegoesforhisMillion on Facebook. He also contacted his previous employers to see if they had a match-funding scheme, which they did. As he embarked on his Million Steps, he posted fun photos of himself walking on a daily basis to ensure his progress remained visible to his fundraising audience along the way.
It took Charlie just 56 days to complete the One Million Steps, he then topped it off with Diabetes UK's annual 12 Bridges Challenge, completing a grand total of 1,569,916 steps – that's over 750 miles. Quite a feat during a heatwave!
Charlie says "I was amazed and overwheelmed by the terrific and generous response - never in all my wildest dreams did I anticipate raising such a handsome sum for Diabetes UK."
The generosity of his many wonderful friends has raised a whopping £2,793 and Gift Aid will push that total well over £3,000.
As a key ingredient to healthy living, a good steady walk every day makes good sense for everyone, whether living with diabetes or not.
Charlie says "It’s remarkable that since doing these two Challenges, so many are now checking their phones and Fitbits each day for the step count they have walked and setting up daily targets to achieve. My next challenge is two-fold
- to keep up the walking and in doing so, keep active and stay healthy
- to persuade my friends to accept these two challenges next year!"
* Many CONGRATULATIONS Charlie! *
