Diabetes education in Harrow 2019

People with diabetes spend on average 3 hours each year with their doctor or nurse.  They are self-managing their diabetes for the remaining 8,757 hours each year. 

It’s therefore vital to get the Information, Knowledge and Skills to manage independently at home, school or work.

2019 - Type 2 diabetes courses in Harrow (and online) 

DESMOND is a one day group training programme for Harrow residents with Type 2 diabetes that aims to teach you how to become a confident self-manager of your condition. You will be helped to identify and set personal health goals and guided in how to work towards achieving them.   

You cannot at present self-refer for this course, so ask your GP or nurse for information. Plans are in place to facilitate self-referrals, to increase the number of venues offered and to run the course in other langugages shortly.

TYPE 2 DIABETES & ME is Diabetes UK’s free online type 2 course, which you can do in your own time at home. It’s a great starting point if you have to wait a long time for one of the DESMOND group courses.  Simply register on the Type 2 Diabetes and Me website – you’ll need your email address and postcode.  

2019 - Type 1 diabetes courses in Brent (for Harrow residents)  

DAFNE is a course for adults that provides the skills to estimate the carbohydrate in each meal and to inject the right dose of insulin. It’s a 5-day course (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, with a follow-up session around 8 weeks later). Normally taught to groups of 6-8 participants under the supervision of DAFNE-trained Educators, usually a diabetes specialist nurse and/or a dietician.  Between sessions you practise carbohydrate estimation and insulin adjustment skills.  Most of the training is built around group work, sharing and comparing experiences with others. However, there are also opportunities for one to one discussions.

Harrow Talking Therapies Diabetes Wellbeing Group  (type 1 and type 2) 

Free 6 week NHS group course in central Harrow to build skills and confidence in diabetes wellbeing. Suitable for adults who are worried or stressed about living with and managing ALL types of diabetes. Learn how emotions can affect your diabetes, techniques for managing stress and worry, explore new ways of thinking, ways to improve sleep and how to maintain wellbeing.  If you prefer to talk one to one, you can also self-refer or ask your GP or nurse to arrange a Talking Therapies referral.
