NHS England (London region) has been working for nearly a year to improve the eye screening services for people with diabetes. There are presently 17 different organisations screening across London's 32 Boroughs and this will be reduced to 6 organsations. The aims of the reorganisation are to:
- Address variation in the service quality
- Improve equity of access and the 'patient experience'
- Rationalise and consolidate services across the London region to reduce fragmentation and risk
- Implement a common and fully integrated service specification across London so that all patients get an equally high quality service.
The results of the re-procurement exercise have now been announced and Harrow - as part of the North West London area which includes: Hillingdon, Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster, Ealing, Hounslow, Brent and Harrow - is to get a new service provider, Health Intelligence Ltd, from 1 November 2015.
A smooth handover of services, building on Medical Imaging's work in Harrow to date, should take place and is being planned now. Contact your usual screening venue if you have any questions. ALL people over 12 yrs of age with diabetes should have an eye check once each year.
A press notice announcing the changes can be found here.
