People with type 2 diabetes needed!

Like Minded is looking for people with type 2 diabetes living in NW London to join a reference group and help the NHS develp appropriate services and support for people who have mental health problems.  A keen interest in mental health, or a loved experience of mental health services, is clearly needed for this role.

Here's the role description:

Like Minded[1] is the strategy to improve the mental health and wellbeing of people living in North West London. We are leading a piece of work in partnership with Imperial College Health Partners (ICHP) and Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) to improve the emotional health of people living with type 2 diabetes. We know that a third of people with long term conditions also have a common mental health issue, such as depression or anxiety, but most aren’t getting support with their mental wellbeing.

What is it we think needs to change?

Research shows there could be between 23 000 - 30 000 people with diabetes in North West London that may also have a common mental health issue or poor mental wellbeing but we only have a record of approximately 7000 people in our GP data. We think that we can improve the physical health of people with diabetes by supporting them with their emotional health and psychological wellbeing. We want to bring together psychological therapy providers, primary care staff, community health, voluntary sector organisations and people living with diabetes to design new ways of working. We think we could improve people’s quality of life, help them meet their health goals and generate savings. The work will also support us working towards ensuring more people get access to psychological therapies which was announced as a recommendation in the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health.

What we are looking for

We are looking for people with lived experience of type 2 diabetes who live in NW London to join our Working Group. Additionally, we would be particularly interested in hearing from people with experience of depression and/ or anxiety. The working group is made up of NHS provider services, voluntary organisations and commissioners of health services and is working to enable the project team to test ideas and co-design the approach.

  • Time commitment: no more than 1 day per month for the next 6 months (third Thursday of the month 3:30pm - 5pm, unless otherwise stated)
  • Location: Meetings to be held at 15 Marylebone Road (NHS NWL offices)
  • Types of activity: in addition to the regular meetings, members will be required to attend relevant co-production workshops

We are also looking for other interested people for our workshops and to test ideas informally as we run the project.

What support will I be given to do the role?

This is voluntary role, however to support you and ensure you are looked after during the recruitment process, we can reimburse travel, childcare and carer costs where needed in line with our Patient and Public Involvement expenses policy (please see attached for more information
