World Diabetes Day 2018

World Diabetes Day 2018

Each year on 14 November, we celebrate World Diabetes Day in memory of the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who discovered a way of using insulin from animal sources to help save the lives of people living with diabetes.

This year members of the Harrow support group includoing Susan, Emily, Gerry, Shudi and Lis hosted a stall at Northwick Park Hospital to promote greater awareness of diabetes, the local services that support people who live with this condition, the risks for getting type 2 and the steps people can take when they are at risk.  We also gave out many leaflets to promote our local Diabetes UK support groups (see EVENTS tab for info/dates).

It was an extremely busy day with many visitors, including lots of nurses who wanted information and Diabetes UK literature.  The photo shows one of the diabetes consultants, Dr Elaine Hui, and two of the Diabetes Specialist Nurses with three of our group members.

We hope to arrange further regular stalls at the Northwick Park Hospital as the task of raising awareness locally, expecially now that Harrow can offer the type 2 Diabetes Prevention Programme for those at risk, can continue - and our groups can grow by spreading the word!
